Attractions of the region
The Charente Maritime offers many pleasures to vacationers. Easily accessible from the
airports of La Rochelle or Bordeaux, we are close to the vineyards of Cognac and the
Bordeaux region. Some of the best farmers' markets in France are located here,
specializing in local seafood, fruit and vegetables. The terrain is perfect for walking
or cycling, with villages every few kilometres where one can stop for refreshments.
Roman ruins are present in several locations, and almost every village has an
interesting church. The best beaches in France begin 25 kimoletres away and extend
for a further 100 kilometres to the Atlantic Islands. The zoo at Palmyre can occupy
children for an entire day, or can be combined with a trip to see the oyster pools.
It is also a birdwatchers paradise.
|
The village
The house is located at the end of a cul-de-sac in the hamlet of Les Tards, which forms
part of the village of La Clisse, ten kilometres from Saintes. Its location, combined
with its private hedged garden, gives an atmosphere of peacefulness and tranquility.
One can find several bakeries, a butcher shop, a small grocery stores, post office,
several restaurants and bars within 4 kilometres, and the nearest large shops are 10
km away, in Saintes.

The house
Once a barn, Chez Nicholas was completely rebuilt three years ago. We retained the
stone walls and beams, but renovated the interior to provide a clean, modern
appearance. The main floor includes a large living room with a comfortable sofa-bed
(for extra sleeping space), desk, television and VCR, and telephone. The adjoining
fitted kitchen includes a gas hob (stove top), overhead exhaust fan, electric oven,
dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator, and the usual small appliances. The dining
room table seats six. The kitchen looks out on a south-facing stone terrace with garden
furniture and BBQ. This terrace is surrounded by a fenced garden which is ideal for
small children. Upstairs, one bedroom has a double bed, and the second has
bunkbeds. The bathroom, which is on the second floor, includes toilet, sink and
shower. The house is ideal for a family with up to three children, or two or three
friends.

The owners
My name is Christina Roy, and I am from Newfoundland, Canada. My husband, Jean Claude,
is French, and is a landscape artist. Our house and studio are in the same village, and
we are always happy to help you with local information, translation, etc, and we
maintain a library of books on the area for your use.
|
Are you house-hunting?
We offer special rates for longer stays and off-season occupancy; a quote will be
provided on request. Chez Nicholas was built with winter occupancy in mind, and is
well insulated as well as having central heating. It's south-facing exposure is
particularly welcoming in winter.
|
Other features
For those of you who like to travel with your pet, we welcome well-behaved animals. We
also have another house for rent in the same hamlet (Chez Louise), which may interest
groups or families travelling together.
